HIW Raffle Fundraising Event

Home Improvement Warehouse (HIW) of Carbondale, IL, has been a staple in the Carbondale community since 1994. HIW is a local retail store best known for offering discount kitchen, bath, and flooring. The owner of HIW, Denny Maggos, has over 40 years in the industry and has built a reputation for offering a variety of high-end quality products for a fraction of the cost. You never know what you’ll find when you stop at HIW, which is one of many reasons customers return.

While those in the community know Denny for helping families and businesses improve their homes and businesses with kitchens, baths, and flooring, others know him for helping improve the quality of life for families battling cancer. In 2022 Denny began serving on the Board of Directors for an emerging local nonprofit organization Fighting Cancer Today and has been a corporate sponsor since its inception. For years, Denny has watched those he cares for battle various types of cancer, starting with his late mother, who was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 1998 and later passed away from bone cancer in 2018. His older brother passed away after battling lung cancer, and two very close friends have had an ongoing battle with kidney and breast cancer.

While Denny served as a supporter of those mentioned above, his lens changed completely when he was diagnosed with lung cancer in 2021 and brain cancer in 2022. Denny’s world changed overnight, and for the first time, he saw firsthand the overwhelming need for emotional support, financial support, and navigation when families arrived home from the hospital. Fighting Cancer Today stepped in and helped. Denny says, “I felt like a weight was lifted off my shoulder. The organization has been instrumental in helping me to navigate the burdens faced while still battling the disease itself. I want others to have access to this kind of support, and what better way than to raise money to support the amazing work being done right here in Southern Illinois?
